Phone Messaging Services

With the storms that hit the Philadelphia area this past week, I wanted to take a look at some of the phone messaging programs that are available to school districts to get the word out to the various stakeholders (Parents, Students, Staff, etc.).  Below are the links to three websites of company's that provide this service, this is not an endorsement of any kind,  just simply a place to start your search if you are looking for such a system.  The nice thing about using a service, is the fact that you no longer have to make the phone tree to get word out to staff, and every household in the district will be contacted so no more time spent listening to the radio for those magical numbers.  Please let me know if you know of other providers so that I can add them to this list.

  1. Radnor SD and Wissahickon SD use Global Connect. Text messages as well as voice messages go out to all. Could we use twitter in addition or to suppliment our "global" messaging?

  2. Philadelphia has no global call system which is different then anything I have ever experienced before they actually use twitter and facebook to post closings and delays. I feel that this is very effective and simple to check up on. The only draw back is the fact that students and parents have the ability to comment on the decisions of administration. Whenever an unfavorable decision is made it usually becomes an all out bash session. If there was a way to lock these post it would be a perfect situation.

  3. I wonder if this type of tool could be used on an individual teacher basis. Personally, I have only come across a handful of times when I needed my students to have information so immediately that I would have needed a phone call system. However, I wonder about how it could be used as an introduction message to students at the start of the year. Just a thought.

  4. I have heard of frequent use of a product called SchoolReach. These types of programs make communications easy and efficient. Thanks for sharing these resources.
