I was curious at what is meant by digital citizenship, and I wanted to know more about it. From looking at different websites, I found that it is a virtual "Bill of Rights" a set of rules that we are to live by in order to be positive contributors to the world wide web.
It came to no surprise that when students were interviewed by other students at the collegiate level, almost all of them bring their computers with them to class. I don't know if the professors were aware, but most of the students would spend time on Facebook or twitter instead of being on task. I mention this because most school districts in the area are looking into ways to fuse technology into the classrooms. Teachers need to be proactive in terms of making sure that students are still working on the task at hand. We are going to have to get used to a little social behavior, much like those teachers who have students work in groups. You will have to be comfortable with a little chaos (social behavior not related to the task, "comfortable with chaos" sounded better).
As an administrator, it will be my responsibility to make sure that my staff has the resources they need as we transition to the one to one system. Below is a video that could be shared at a faculty meeting to introduce the topic of digital citizenship. Please let me know your thoughts on the idea of digital citizenship.
That is a great point. Being a good digital citizen means being responsible for your work and staying on task because you need to and realizing that your allowed to use the technology because it is going to help you in the future. The other side of the coin is that once students have completed the work at hand (and I mean quality work) they should be allowed to check the news, look at facebook, or play games. I have always said that i would rather my students get 5-10 minutes at the end of class to do whatever they want online then for them to waste the first 40 minutes trying to find a way past the internet blocks set up by school. Also, to teach this initially they do make software that allows the teacher to get windows of the students computers to make sure they are all on task this way the students never know when they are being check on.
ReplyDeleteGreat points! I feel that being a digital citizen goes hand in hand with being a good student, following rules and meeting expectations. It's a students responsibility to complete tasks in a timely manner and upon doing so it's teachers obligation to have enrichment or earned leisure time. If this is earned students should be allowed to use technology for personal information etc... If students understand this time could be earned they are more inclined to work harder on the first task and spend less time sneaking a peek at facebook etc...
